The possible scenarios for avoiding snap elections in Greece
Wednesday’s presidential ballot, in which government candidate Stavros Dimas attracted just 160 votes, leaves the coalition with a huge amount of work to do by the final vote on December 29 if it is to have any chance of avoiding early election.
Although the coalition might pick up a few extra votes in the second ballot on Tuesday (four of the five absentees from Wednesday’s vote might be forthcoming), it will still be well short of the target of 180 it needs to elect Dimas.
