Another spin of the wheel for Greece
There couldn’t have been a more fitting end to the year in Greece than the Ferris Wheel fiasco in Athens’s Syntagma Square. It was the first year the city centre’s Christmas and New Year’s celebrations were to include this attraction. It went up amid much fanfare, only to come down a few days later as the structure did not have the necessary security certificates.

Tsipras bet on recovery a long shot but offers better odds than snap polls
Given that uncertainty about what, if any, deal will emerge from Greece’s negotiations with its lenders, and between the institutions themselves, there has been fresh speculation about what political developments (even snap elections) this could trigger.

Are we taking Greeks' devotion to the euro for granted?
Political developments around the western world, from the victory for Brexit to Donald Trump being elected US president, have been a rude awakening for politicians, commentators and pollsters who did not see this shift in voter behaviour coming.

The Cyprus conundrum
Brendan O’Leary and John McGarry have convincingly explained that every ethnic/religious conflict has a “meta-conflict” level. At the meta-conflict level, the conflicting sides disagree about what the conflict is about. Each side advocates their own understanding about the causes, the nature and the substance of the conflict they are embroiled in.

Obama ends with big picture amid dwindling hope
What could Greece have expected from the visit of a US leader in the final days of his presidency, before he is replaced by someone who appears to be the antithesis in personal and policy terms? Not much. What did it get from Barack Obama’s brief stay in Athens? Probably more than it expected.
