While China-US relations are deteriorating over bitter trade disputes, the imposition of tit-for-tat tariffs and intellectual property rights, the Sino-Russian partnership is evolving and deepening in areas such as security and defense, bilateral energy cooperation as well as the Kremlin’s expanding participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Welcome to the club: Greece Joins the 17+1 network
In the course of the past decade, China has invested in and provided loan funding for infrastructure projects across Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe. During this period Beijing has also established an institutional architecture across countries in these three European sub-regions. Founded in 2012, the 16+1 network organizes annual Central and Eastern Europe–China Summits.

Are Chinese investments starting to hit a wall in Germany?
For two successive years, China has been Germany’s most important trading partner. In 2017, the trade volume between both countries reached 186,6 billion euro. Germany’s second most important trading partner was The Netherlands with 177 billion euro, followed by the United States (173 billion euro) and France (169 billion euro).

Preparing for a new normal in German politics
What a start to the week in German politics: Following the huge losses of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the regional elections in Hesse, Angela Merkel, the party leader since April 2000 and Chancellor since November 2005, announced her gradual retreat from German politics.
