In an apparent bid to win over Greece’s middle class, which was still reeling from the last economic crisis when the pandemic hit, SYRIZA has presented a range of relief proposals, including debt writedowns.
The suggestions were immediately dismissed by the government as wishful thinking, reminiscent of SYRIZA’s aspirational economic plan, known as the Thessaloniki programme, before it first came to power in 2015.
