Sunday’s European Parliament elections delivered a surprise blow to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as his New Democracy party fell well short of its target for the ballot although it came first in the vote, well ahead of its opponents.

The goal set by the PM was for his centre-right party to gain around 33 pct, close to the result it secured in the last EU elections five years ago. Even though most opinion polls indicated that this target was within reach, the conservatives got nowher...
