Controversial migration bill divides government factions

Recently-appointed migration minister Thanos Plevris made his mark with the passage of a bill which makes it easier for Greece to deport failed asylum seekers and restricts the right to residency.

The bill has been condemned by human rights organisations and the opposition but has also been criticised by moderate New Democracy lawmakers, including Plevris’s predecessor, who argue that the clampdown will make it harder for Greece to fill labour gaps.
