Tsipras makes unpopular choice for president, with eye on political balance

In a somewhat controversial choice, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras chose former Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos as his party's presidential candidate yesterday.

There was a mixed reaction in SYRIZA's parliamentary group when Pavlopoulos, a New Democracy member, was announced as Tsipras's preferred candidate. It was noticeable that many leftist MPs did not applaud the nomination.
