Greece and Albania seek to leave Beleri case behind in 2024 after year of turmoil

In 2023 Athens and Tirana experienced a long diplomatic spat due to the case involving Fredi Beleri, the ethnic Greek elected mayor of Himare in southern Albania.

Beleri has been held without charges on suspicion of ballot fraud since May, and several appeals for his release have been rejected by Albanian courts. He has also been denied the right to take his oath.
