Although the government has tried to deflect attention from its responsibility for the OPEKEPE farm subsidy scandal by broadening the scope of the parliamentary inquiry so it dates back to 1998 - thereby forcing other administrations and parties to account for their actions - the early stages of the committee's proceedings, as well as fears about the loss of EU subsidies, suggest that the issue is unlikely to fade any time soon.
