Tsipras calls snap elections after heavy defeat that puts ND on course for clear majority

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called snap elections on Sunday after SYRIZA suffered a heavy defeat in the European Parliament elections, making it virtually impossible for him to hold on until the end of the government’s term in September.
New Democracy was on course late on Sunday to win the European Parliament vote by around 9 percentage points, which was a much wider margin than SYRIZA officials (and perhaps those in the opposition party as well) had expected.
