A moment to reflect, not celebrate
Well, the first thing to say is: Celebrate what? Until the recent devastating fire in Mati, on the outskirts on Athens, there was talk that the government was planning a grand event to mark Greece’s exit from its third adjustment programme on August 20. If anything, though, August 20 should be a moment for reflection, rather than celebration.

Saving Angela Merkel with the help of Alexis Tsipras
The recent Council summit of the EU was termed a make-or-break moment by some of its participants. Numerous media representatives gathered in Brussels reported that the raison d’être of the EU was at risk. Most financial analysts predicted a stormy reaction in bond markets if a compromise could not be reached.

The tie that binds
A cringeworthy gathering full of symbolism but lacking any substance at the Zappeion hall in central Athens seemed a fitting way to mark the imminent conclusion of Greece’s final bailout and an agreement with the country’s lenders on debt relief.
