Crisis management policy: the sad lesson of the Greek case
The Greeks have given our civilization much, including tragedies such as Sophocles’ Antigone, where everyone eventually dies. Unfortunately, we are now witnessing a different kind of tragedy: the unnecessary sacrifice and hardship inflicted on the Greek people by the wrong economic crisis policy. The Greeks have been hit twice as much and twice as long as necessary.

Mangling the truth
In a quote some attribute to ancient Greek dramatist Aeschylus, the truth is said to be the first casualty of war. Perhaps the same can be said in times of economic crisis, which some have likened to a state of war. Certainly, one could safely say that accuracy has taken a severe battering during the Greek crisis.

The enemy within
There has been much gnashing of teeth over the last few days after coalition MP Giorgos Kyritsis, who is also the government’s spokesman on the refugee issue, suggested in a comment piece in SYRIZA-backed Avgi newspaper that the current coalition was elected in September to shift the burden for Greece’s fiscal adjustment to those who had backed the Yes campaign in last July’s referendum.

Greek banks on cusp of improved liquidity conditions
The successful completion of the first programme review and the subsequent decision of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) to disburse a 7.5-billion-euro bailout tranche are expected to trigger a number of important developments for Greek banks.
