Elections, especially when they point to a substantial shift in power, often coax observers into making snap judgments even though history tells us that the fluctuations of politics and political figures are best assessed from a distance.

No late rally for Tsipras
Alexis Tsipras was due to deliver his final campaign speech at around 19.30 on Friday, at a rally in front of Parliament in central Athens. In fact, it was closer to 21.30 when he emerged to speak to the relatively small crowd of SYRIZA supporters before Sunday’s European and local elections.

Sunday’s European Parliament elections result in Greece confirmed that the dominance of Alexis Tsipras in the country’s politics, which started with a win in the same contest in 2014, has come to an end.

A campaign that leaves Greece in pain
Earlier this month, the Pew Research Centre published a survey indicating how satisfied people are with the way democracy is working in their country. In Greece, 84 percent said they were not satisfied, which was the second highest among the 27 countries surveyed and well above the 51 percent average.

Barring any dramatic twists, the outcome of Greece’s next general election seems to have been decided. But the date of the vote is less of a certainty.
